Quests are an important part of the game play and progression in Classic. Several advanced quests have high skill level requirements, particularly in combat. An example of a skill can be woodcutting, where a player chops trees to collect logs. Some of the advantages is able to produce your own armours, or fight a mighty foes. Training skills is one of the things many people choose to do, as it can unlock many advantages over others in the game. There are a variety of skills in RuneScape Classic, from combat skills, to gathering skills. Worlds 2, 3, 4, and 5 were the only worlds available to all players. World 1 was for veteran players only, a distinction given to those who logged into RuneScape Classic between August 2005 and January 2006. At the time of closing in August 2018, there were 5 servers, sometimes referred to as "worlds" for RuneScape Classic.

The vast majority of the Runescape player base are from Old school Runescape. Runescape 3 is frowned upon by the majority of the RS community as it has strayed away from the core roots of the game which originally made it unique and enjoyable.
There is a huge controversy about which version of the game is the best. These private servers are mainly community funded and driven and are not ran by official companies. Old school private servers are mostly marketed around underground forums related to the official game. This is to make the experience less grindy and time-consuming and jumps straight to the more enjoyable parts of the game. These private servers make it easier to obtain certain items and reach achievements in the game much easier than the official one. OS private servers are most known for being an easier version of the official game. OSRS RSPS do not own any right to the official game. These private servers are hosted by individuals that have no whatsoever connection to Jagex Ltd.
